The Grizzly opened in Mason, Ohio on July 1, 1972 as the third course designed by the legendary partnership of Jack Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead. Sometimes fierce, sometimes friendly, the Grizzly name was bestowed on the course, forever linking it to the incredible legacy of the Golden Bear.
A Course Designed by Golfers for Golfers
In the Nicklaus tradition, the Grizzly fully utilizes the expanse of land with a variety of brilliantly designed holes, taking players on a scenic tour of the area. Muirhead’s influence is evidenced through long, multi-curved fairways, large trees retained as natural hazards, water hazards on the final holes, and plenty of bunkers.
A Legacy Like No Other
Ever since Jack Nicklaus’ victory in the inaugural 1973 Ohio Kings Island Open, more professional tournaments have been played at the Grizzly than any other course in the region.
- The Ohio Kings Island Open: 1973, 1974, 1976, 1977
- LPGA Championship: 1978–1989
- Kroger Senior Classic: 1990–2001
- LPGA Futures Tour: 2008–2010
From the Past into the Future
The City of Mason purchased the course and facilities in 2007.
Today, the Grizzly is an 18 hole, par 71 course that plays from a minimum of 5,572 yards to a maximum of 6,474 yards.
The Academy course is perfect for golfers short on time or just looking to get a little practice. Featuring two par-5s and two par-4s, you can play it once or as much as you like. Put your game to the test on four original championship holes designed by Jack Nicklaus, Desmond Muirhead, and Jay Morrish.
