Pro Tip: Unlock Power with a Stronger Foundation

Looking to add distance off the tee? Start from the ground up. True power in your golf swing comes from a stable base and efficient weight transfer—not just swinging harder.

Here’s how to unlock more power:

  • Widen Your Stance: A slightly wider stance increases stability and helps you load into your trail leg during the backswing.
  • Engage Your Core: Power isn’t all in the arms—activating your core during the transition helps generate speed through impact.
  • Shift, Don’t Slide: Focus on a controlled weight shift to your lead side during the downswing. This builds torque and leads to a more explosive release.

Remember, a balanced and athletic setup is the launchpad for powerful, consistent shots. Want to dial in your swing even more? Book a lesson with our PGA staff and take your game to the next level.

Pro Tip: Course Care 101 – Divots and Ball Marks

Golf is a game of precision and respect—not just for the sport, but for the course itself. One of the easiest ways to keep The Grizzly in top condition is by properly replacing divots and repairing ball marks.

Here’s how you can do your part:

Replace Divots: If your shot takes a chunk out of the fairway, replace the divot whenever possible. Press it back in and step on it to help it re-root. If the divot shatters or is missing, use the sand/seed mix provided on the carts and fill the area evenly.

Repair Ball Marks: Greens are delicate, and an unaddressed ball mark can cause long-term damage. Use a proper ball mark repair tool (or a tee if needed) to gently push the edges of the mark inward—never lift upward, as that can harm the turf. Lightly tap the area with your putter to smooth it out.

A well-maintained course makes for a better playing experience for everyone. Thanks for keeping The Grizzly in great shape!

SPRING AERIFICATION

The Grounds and Maintenance crews are hard at work preparing The Grizzly for the upcoming spring season! In addition to exterior building and patio clean-up efforts, this month’s focus includes deep-tining the greens, spring aeration, and applying essential fertilizers and chemicals to promote healthy turf growth.

As early as possible in March, the team will deep-tine the greens, tees, and driving range. This process helps alleviate compaction and improve root growth, ensuring healthier playing surfaces. Disruption to play should be minimal. Then, approximately 3–4 weeks later, in late March or early April, the crew will conduct a solid-tine aerification, followed by verticutting and a light sand topdressing.

Aerification is a critical practice for maintaining high-quality turf conditions. Over time, foot traffic and routine mowing compact the soil, restricting air, water, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. By aerating the greens, we relieve this compaction, improve drainage, and encourage stronger root development, which ultimately leads to firmer, more consistent playing conditions.

These efforts will ensure the course remains in top shape heading into what looks to be a busy golf season. We appreciate your patience during these maintenance periods and look forward to providing the best possible playing experience!

Pro Tip: Mastering Winter Chipping & Pitching

Cold weather and dormant turf can make short-game shots tricky, but smart adjustments will keep your touch sharp.

  1. Adjust Your Setup – With firmer, tighter lies in winter, play the ball slightly back in your stance and lean your weight forward. This promotes crisp contact and prevents chunked shots.
  2. Use the Bounce – A wedge with more bounce (10-12 degrees) helps prevent digging into the firm ground. Keep your hands neutral to allow the club’s sole to glide rather than dig.
  3. Control Your Trajectory – Lower shots roll out more, so choose a less-lofted club (like a gap wedge) when chipping. For soft pitches, hinge your wrists early and accelerate through impact.
  4. Stay Smooth – Cooler temps can stiffen your swing. Focus on relaxed hands and a steady tempo to maintain feel and distance control.

Stay sharp this winter, and your short game will be dialed in for spring!

Winter Updates: Operational Changes for January – February

As we embrace the quieter winter months at The Grizzly, we’re making a few updates to improve your experience now and into the upcoming season. Here’s everything you need to know about our winter operations, including parking changes, adjusted clubhouse hours, and a temporary break for some of our favorite programs.

Parking Changes

We’re excited to share that the temporary parking lot south of the outdoor shelters will be getting a much-needed upgrade! This lot will be closed for grading and resurfacing starting in January, with plans to reopen by late March or early April—just in time for the in-season rush.

During this time, we ask all guests to park in the east lot near the driving range. To accommodate additional parking needs, we’re also relocating the barricades on Paul Flory Way. Thank you for your patience as we make these improvements—we can’t wait for you to see the refreshed lot when it’s finished!

Clubhouse Hours

To streamline operations during the colder months, the Pro Shop and Great 18 Bar & Grill will have the following hours:

  • Monday through Friday: Open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Weekends: Open only when the temperature is forecasted to reach above 45°F.

Weekend closures will be communicated ahead of time via email, so keep an eye on your inbox for updates.

Programs on Hiatus

We know you love our Last Call Trivia Nights and Great 18 Live! music series, and we’re thrilled to announce their return in April. While these programs take a short winter break, we’re busy planning an exciting new addition to the lineup: Singo (Music Bingo) on Thursday nights! Get ready for more fun and entertainment as spring approaches.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we prepare for a fantastic season ahead. Stay warm, and we’ll see you at The Grizzly soon!
